Artist notes
Taken in April 2020 during COVID-19 lockdown in New Zealand. When our day-to-day life slowed down to an unusual pace, I had the time to be contemplative and reflective. I was thinking, when composing this still life, that even when the world around us felt upside down, nature carried on as normal. Where we fortunately live, flowers continued to bloom and birds to sing. Our hedges were full of camellias, busy with life from wax eyes and bees. I found this comforting and reassuring.
This still life is about life, and how even when beauty begins to fade or we experience loss, there is still beauty around us if we take the time to look. The petal delicately balanced on the edge of the board is symbolic of the time we were experiencing.
